Fake News for the Week Ending April 26, 2019

This was a pretty calm week for fake news, especially compared to the previous week. That’s not to say that there wasn’t any fake news, just that it wasn’t quite as explosive. Here are the headlines:

  • Here’s a fake news story from “nbcnews.world,” a site impersonating the real  NBC News site. Under the headline “President Trump Issues Immediate Pardon for Arrested Border Militia Leader,” the story claims that President Trump offered full immunity and a presidential pardon to Larry Mitchell Hopkins, the 69-year-old leader of an armed militia group illegally detaining immigrants on the Mexican border. Sorry folks, while Hopkins and his group did indeed do the vigilante thing, there has been no official presidential reaction to it. (At least not yet, anyway!) Snopes tells the story.

  • Don’t you just love false or misleading Facebook memes? Here’s a new one, claiming that states that have legalized marijuana have also passed laws that bar marijuana users from owning guns. There has been no such legislation passed, anywhere. All fake, as as detailed by FactCheck.org.

  • In anticipation of fake news stories dissuading immigrants from participating in the upcoming 2020 census, the U.S. Census Bureau has asked Facebook, Twitter, and Google to help fend off the threat. Reuters has the story here.
  • How do Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube fend off fake news stories in real time? It’s a lot of work, as the Voice of America reports.
