Here’s the real news about fake news this week:
- Donald Trump has done a lot of questionable things in his three years as president, but he did not pardon Charles Manson, despite what alleged Democratic presidential candidate Marianne Williamson thinks. Snopes does the debunking.
- Deepfake videos are a problem not just for politicians but also for businesses. The Washington Post’s Technology 202 has the story.
- Right-wingers are all up in arms about the impeachment experts that testified before Congress this week, mainly because they’re for Mr. Trump’s impeachment. Not surprisingly, the up-in-arms right-wingers are spreading all sorts of malicious rumors about these experts, including photos allegedly showing law professor Pamela Karlan in embarrassing situations. Also not surprisingly, these are not photos of Ms. Karlan. FactCheck.org does the debunking.
- Authoritarian regimes worldwide are starting to imprison legitimate journalists for breaking their phoney baloney “fake news” laws. Read about it in The Washington Post.
