Fake News for the Week Ending December 27, 2019

You’d think fake news would take a break over the holidays, but you’d be wrong. Looks like Santa left a lot of fake news presents under our fake news tree this year, including:

  • No, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was not was not led out of her office in handcuffs during an FBI raid. It’s just more satire from the Taters Gonna Tate website, which appears to be giving The Onion a run for its money. Snopes debunks it all here.

  • The hyperbole and disinformation surrounding President Trump’s impeachment is bigger than anything ever before seen in the universe. Witness Republican Rep. Barry Loudermilk’s claim that “When Jesus was falsely accused of treason, Pontius Pilate gave Jesus the opportunity to face his accusers. During that sham trial, Pontius Pilate afforded more rights to Jesus than the Democrats have afforded this president in this process.” You don’t have to be a Biblical scholar to know that that really isn’t true. (And Trump isn’t being crucified, either.) PolitiFact has the story.
  • What happens if Russia continues bombarding us with fake news and further interferes in the upcoming 2020 elections? U.S. Cyber Command says they’ll retaliate with various information warfare techniques against Russian elites and senior leadership. Read about it in The Washington Post.
  • Also from the Post, their most popular fact checks of 2019. It’s how they combat fake news, lies, and other disinformation. The #1 item? “Are U.S. women’s soccer players really earning less than men?” Read the list here.
